Before and After Bathrooms

Bathrooms, kitchens, master bedrooms and open-floor plans are the most important features to buyers today. We looked at kitchen remodels two months ago, so this month we will look in at bathroom remodels. Most of the after photos below did not move walls or switch the positions of fixtures. That is the most cost-effective way to remodel your bathroom. However, if you have one extra foot that you can steal from the master bedroom or a closet sometimes the results will far outweigh the costs.

The 70’s had a real color challenge in bathrooms and kitchens. Browns dominated along with avocado, sun-gold and powder blue. When remodeling a bathroom think about the style of your entire home. A traditional home deserves a traditional or transitional bathroom at most. Super contemporary designs will only emphasize the traditional aspects of the home and compete.

Average Bathroom Remodel Cost in the Bay Area

Bathroom remodels in the Bay Area typically cost more than in other regions due to higher labor rates, material costs, and permit requirements. Here's a rough breakdown of current average bathroom remodel costs:

  • Minor Bathroom Remodel: $18,000–$25,000
  • Mid-Range Remodel: $25,000–$40,000
  • High-End or Custom Remodel: $40,000–$70,000+
Your total bathroom remodel cost will vary depending on the scope of work, the square footage, and your finish selections (tile, fixtures, cabinetry, etc.).

What Impacts the Cost?

  1. Size of the Space
Smaller bathrooms (under 40 square feet) typically cost less but can still be expensive if finishes are high-end or layout changes are needed.
  2. Layout Changes
Moving plumbing or changing the room configuration? That requires more labor, permits, and often increases costs significantly.
  3. Material & Fixture Selection
Marble tiles, designer faucets, and custom vanities all elevate the look, but they also elevate the price tag. On the other hand, pre-fab vanities, porcelain tile, and standard finishes can help you stay within budget.
  4. Labor and Permits
In cities like Oakland, labor rates and city permitting can make up 30-40% of your total remodeling budget. At Beyond Builders, we handle all permitting and code compliance to ensure your remodel meets local standards.

What’s Trending in 2026?

As a construction company deeply embedded in the Bay Area’s residential scene, here’s what we’re seeing more homeowners ask for in bathroom renovations:

  • Curbless Walk-In Showers: Sleek, safe, and stylish.
  • Floating Vanities: A modern touch that also saves floor space.
  • Matte Black and Brushed Brass Fixtures: Statement pieces with staying power.
  • Smart Features: From heated floors to touchless faucets, tech is making its way into the bathroom.
  • Sustainable Materials: Low-flow fixtures, reclaimed wood, and energy-efficient lighting are top choices for eco-conscious homeowners.
